Once a UK, or other, publisher has acquired the translation rights to a work of literature by an Austrian writer, and a contract has been signed between the publisher and a translator, the publisher can apply to the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture for a translation grant.  Applications both for fiction and for children’s books are welcome.

The form to be filled out for these applications is available from:
Bundesministerium für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur
Sektion V – Kunstangelegenheiten
Minoritenplatz 5
1014 Vienna

The application form can be down-loaded from:
www.bmukk.gv.at/medienpool/15055/form_foerderung.pdf
This form is in German but help is on hand from the contact persons.

An application can be submitted at any time of year and should include copies of the contracts between the publishing houses and the publishing house and the respective translator as well as information about the translator (CV and list of translated works) Where possible the translation, partial translation, or translated pages should be included. The application should be submitted in good time before the book goes to print.

Always mention that the title is a New Books in German title: books featured in our pages and bought by a UK or other English-language publisher are guaranteed a grant – the size of the grant will differ from case to case.
